dual boot linux and windows

What is the best way to dual boot with windows on the same drive? I have a need to do this, but I remember the last time that I did this: things were fine until Windows did an update - and took over the Master Boot.

Use UEFI and GPT partitioning. When Windows usurps, it's a simple process to use the PC's BBS hotkey to select Linux for booting. Once booted into Linux, use efibootmgr to undo what Windows did.

If you can't use UEFI, then plan on Windows doing a takeover, after which you will: boot in rescue mode from removable media, chroot into the installed system, and reinstall the bootloader.
