When you get to Mints boot menu: can you choose install directly instead of booting into live desktop?
No, it always go to Desktop and there is the Mint install applet, that i click and it doesn't open.
also i just had it installed in my other P4 cpu machine and it installed great and runs great also had it installed on a Pentium M non Pae cpu and it's running like a champ.
Also let you know that i have Win Xp installed also in one HDD and linux installed in another,
and after it didn not install Mint , i went ahead and installed Xubuntu14.04 and it installed great.
and runs great,
what caught my eye on mint 17.1 is that it has support till 2019 5 years, while Xubuntu has 3 years only,
