This is only the beta version for the moment, and the beta period will last several weeks.

However, you will be able to in-situ upgrade from the beta version to the final release version when it becomes available.

Does this mean that LMDE is just round the corner?

LMDE will be coming after Mint 19 is released, with a beta in July if my memory serves me correctly.

Better late than never!
