xserver problem

I get an xserver error at startup. I used the dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg and then chose the i800 driver. after words i get taken back to prompt. the only way to get into my laptop is to use the startx command. but there is no shutdown button in gnome. Also, I keep getting the xserver error at startup. So i have to run startx everytime from command line. is there any way to fix this. This all happened in attempt to install beryl(I got beryl installed and emerald-themes, but they aren't working). BTW I'm using dapper on a ECS G553 machine. I'm thinking of upgrading to edgy, but will that fix anything. any help would be appreciated. TIA
