XMMS "stutters"

copy posted from http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...threadid=95032

I am using slackware 9.0 on a DELL Inspiron 3200. It has a Crystal 4237B sound card, which works with the CS4232 loadable sound module that came with the 2 gigs of software that I got with a "dumb" install of slack 9.

Sound didn't work out of the box though, so I RTFM'ed the web for some how-tos and got the driver for the card to work with default settings. The instructions said I had to recompile it into the kernel because the only way to modify its settings was through the hard-coded source code... but I was like, uh, why not try the default settings first... This was a while ago, I think I added some changes to rc.d\rc.modules or something, and basically I rebooted, startx'ed, and ran xmms, and voila it played back an mp3 file fine...

Then I did some other stuff rebooted once or twice. I opened xmms, tried playing the same mp3 file back again, and xmms stuttered on the beginning. That is, it kept looping the same mp3 audio frame over and over.... It wouldn't advance. I can seek into the future of the mp3 file using the seek bar, but it doesnt advance automatically...

Any clues as to how i can make it work? Btw, AIM sounds (if I turn them on) work fine I think.. Even though theyre short, they don't seem to "stutter" on the first frame...

Please do not post the same thread in more than one forum. Picking the most relevant forum and posting it once there makes it easier for other members to help you and keeps the discussion all in one place.
