Unhappy X server just stops working

Hi!

I'm using LinuxMint 6 (based in Ubuntu 8.10) and my problem is simply that the X server just stops working.

I can't give you a lot of information about the problem because I think I've not do anything strange... since last weeks I had the computer on, over 350 hours and this last weekend I turn it off. Yesterday I turn it on again and the X server doesn't work: The laptop monitor has got some strange and coloured lines and the external one has some black and white shapes (they looked like an unsyntonized TV, but static). Moreover, when I tried to press Ctrl + Alt + F1 to switch to tty1, the laptop restarts itself. As the problem persisted, I boot the laptop in recovery mode and I chose try to fix X server. Now when I turn my laptop on in the main screen there are some violet lines in the upper area of the screen (and the lower is black), and in the external one there are the same but sometimes it disconnects.

The more estrange thing is that the xorg.conf is the same that I'm using now, from a LiveCD (I suppose that the option try to fix X server simply makes a new automatic xorg.conf)

Quote:
Section "Device"
Identifier "Configured Video Device"
EndSection

Section "Monitor"
Identifier "Configured Monitor"
EndSection

Section "Screen"
Identifier "Default Screen"
Monitor "Configured Monitor"
Device "Configured Video Device"
EndSection
and the LiveCD its working.

What could I do? Any way to try to fix the problem??

Thanks a lot for your time, and forgive my poor english (I wish you are understanding me).

strage white and coloured lines on the screen , you say ?

well that could be the symptom of lcd screen failure , or may be not

anyways , you need to tell us more or at least do more checks yourself
try a livecd or something

or boot into bios setup at startup.

You say that everything works fine from liveCD?

Did you do any upgrade during your 350h session?

Can you show any X errors? (try to log on remotely)

I don't think so, because with a LinuxMint 6 LiveCD it works.

Sorry, there is an error in my first post: [...] and the LiveCD is working.

And... what could I do at bios setup?

Yes (but it isn't configured properly so the resolution is bad).

Maybe... but I'm not sure :S .

I'll try to give you more information, but I don't know what can I do to log remotely... Any way to boot in a terminal mode (without X server)?

This could be important:

If I select dpkg in recovery mode it says that some NEW packages will be installed (linux-headers-2.6.27-11, linux-headers-2.6.27-11-generic, linux-image-2.6.27-11-generic, linux-restricted-modules-2.6.27-11-generic and nvidia-180-modaliases) and some will be upgraded (libpurple0 and others that I think they aren't related to the problem, but also hal-info, nvidia-common, xserver-xorg-core, xserver-xorg-video-radeon...).

But there is a problem... if I say YES it try to proceed but fails with the messages Failed to fetch [package URI here] Could not resolve 'archive.ubuntu.com'. It seems to fail because I have no Internet connection (I try by WiFi and wired, and it is the same).

By the by, my graphics card is a Mobility Radeon HD 2400 XT HyperMemory.

Well... I've fixed the problem.

I write the steps that I've followed (maybe it could help someone):

I booted in text mode —simply adding text to the Kernel options from GRUB menu— and I did the installation/upgrade of the packages. Since that, the systems returns to work in graphical mode, but with bad resolution and without Compiz. Then I installed the driver again and replace the automatic xorg.conf with the old one and everything went back to the normality.

Thanks for your time .
