wpa_supplicant spikes cpu usage to 70%-90%, any ideas why?

All,

I have an IBM Thinkpad T30 with an Pentium 4 processor and 1gig of ram. I recently install the latest version (9.04) of crunchbang linux and I love it except when I'm connected to my wireless network, every so often, my CPU usage spikes to near 100%.

I ran top during this and found out that the wpa_supplicant command is spiking to 70%-90% and I do not know why.

I am connecting to my wireless WPA2 Personal wireless network using a Belkin USB wireless stick. The internal wireless card on Thinkpad does not support anything higher than WEP and I want to keep my wireless network secure.

Does anyone have any ideas why the wpa_supplicant would spike like that? It gets a little frustrating when I am in the middle of working on this thing and the whole system grinds to a halt.

Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

My guess is it's doing a lot of work. It might tell you.

why not remove the -B and add a -d to see what's going on?
