Has anyone else gotten the ACPI support to work on their Compaq? Ive wrestled with the beast for about the past month or more trying to get it to work, and I always seem to come to a dead end. I cant get it to work to save my life. I was hoping someone else out there had this kind of laptop, and has it working, so mabye they can tell me what Im missing. Thanks in advance.
The main trouble I have is it gets to where it says
"Looking for DSDT tables, not found!"
Im not sure what the DSDT tables are, but that causes my laptop to freeze every time without fail. I imagine this has something to do with ACPI, since this is in the process of starting it when I boot into text mode. Any ideas?
P.S. How can you control your fans and monitor your temperature without using ACPI? Mine isnt listed on the blacklist on the sourceforge website.
In this link, the guy doing the review says he got the laptop to run ACPI after patching the kernel on Redhat 7.3. That tells me that it works for sure, but that Im definitely doing something wrong

ACPI won't help to cool down the laptop (fan/cpu/disk), but at least it works for halt/reboot.
Btw, ACPI is poorly handled by the Compaq BIOS!!
No need to patch? I was told I had to patch. How do you keep you laptop from overheating if it doesnt help cool? Also, which BIOS are you using? Heck, Ill venture the question of how did you get it working, since I cant?

My Compaq has a Phoenix Bios v4.60. I installed a MDK 9.1 straight out of the box. Previous versions (8.x) needed a patch in order to halt/reboot properly (laptop was freezing, and you had to press the power button at least 5 secs to reboot/halt it).
Now acpid (no apmd) can also generate an event when pwr button is pressed, or when laptop is closed, or when battery gets low. It's up to you to write the appropriate script if you really want to handle those events (including software suspend). I wrote a little one to simply "halt" the system when battery is really low.
Concerning overheating, I really don't know how to handle it. Tried to play with kernel options (see "General Setup" in kernel config), but didn't help. My 702EA becomes rather hot after a while, but what's "over" heating anyway ? I never had a problem with this (up to now, after more than a year 1/2). The two little "feet" under the laptop help to keep the air flowing below the case.

I think we have the same BIOS, Ill have to check the next time I start mine up. Did you ever get the same error message Im getting? Mine always says "starting acpid: failed, cant open /proc/acpi/events"
