What live Linux distros are most suitable for use of persistent USB?

Same Question as 4 years ago https://superuser.com/questions/7121...stent-live-usb

Wondering if there's some different answers.

So I bought this nice refurbished old Lenova Thinkpad 510 laptop that has Windows 10 installed on its 1 and only harddrive, and its under warranty to leave it that way for a year, but I don't really want to use Windows unless I absolutely have to and thought maybe if there was a Live boot USB that allowed customization and changes (commonly known as "persistent live USB?"

The latest Knoppix 8.2 usb drive I have was having some troubles and was kind of sluggish. https://distrowatch.com/table.php?distribution=knoppix and I didn't like it.

Mint 19 cinnamon gnome is a little better:

I really miss my favorite astrology GNU software program: http://openastro.org/ There's nothing as good for astrology software in Windows for free.

And I'm sure there's some other software that's better that I want to play with I can't remember right now.

What's your favorite live alterable persistent usb live distro so you can evade the crappy Windows 10 installation that's there just in case you might need it?

Which one is best and most customizable and alterable?

With the lower price of flash drives and their larger size it would be easier to just do an actual install to a flash drive rather than using a persistent live system.

I personally run my Kali for Live w/ persistence on USB 3.1 and can barely tell the difference, a lighter Distro would just be even better. Its a lot better than what it use to be, especially with USB 3.0 if you have the ports to match or even class 10 or higher SD would be just as good

I would stick with Live over full install on USB tho. Live runs entirely in ram which is a lot faster than normal storage. Constantly pulling from a slow usb, even if its is a newer usb 3.0, you will deff take a performance hit or can just install and test, only way to find out for yourself.

AntiX (or MX) Linux are my suggestions.

I agree that using a proper install to some usb media will be best.
You also have an easy option to simply run a virtual machine. The vm virtual hard drive could be on the usb if you wish.

Might consider containers too depending on use.

Running a usb with persistence does a few things. One is it tends to have the virtual hard drive image in a compressed state on usb. Seems to speed up the deal. However a usb port and usb flash drive kind of suffers from being slow in read/write situations even with usb3 and very fast usb drives.

Yes. I installed Manjaro XFCE like this and it runs great on a USB 3.0 port. Doesn't feel sluggish at all.
