Want Windows XP and Linux on my Acer AspireOne, which Linux should I install?
Hi! Newbie here who wants one of you more experience Linux users to recommend a version of linux for my Acer Netbook. I'm running Windows XP and would like to continue using it. I use these programs frequently:
Mozilla Firefox
Open Office
Urban Terror
So would like to Urban Terror in Linux in the hope it will run smoother and faster than Windows XP allows.
yeh but netbook remix (no first hand experience) doesnt look too good and very limited, Looks like it cant be customized and fiddled with.
do some research and pick the one you like best....or ask better questions about the different types of distros and then pick the one you want.
just my 2pence
Now you're just talking rubbish. Any Linux distro can look like anything you want. The first thing I did was install KDE4 to replace gnome.
Any linux distro can be "customised and fiddled with" exactly the same as any other linux distro, and the benefit of ubuntu is you get the great software repositories and a distro that is actually optimised for use on a netbook.

Alright alright!! if you read my post again without your head up your arse you would actually see that i said it LOOKS like it is limited and i also stated that I DONT HAVE FIRST HAND EXPERIENCE so i couldnt recommened that.
sorry i wasnt aware that it could be made into ubuntu desktop! im no pro, i read up on it, saw images and clips thats about it.

There's nothing head up my arse about correcting some fool posting assumptions with no actual knowledge. You know what the say about assumptions so I won't bother repeating it.

nope i dont know what they say about assumptions...
anyway what would you advise then??
other than installing KDE4 (isnt this just released?....has it been tested and proven to be stable?)
i see you've been here for ages, not looking for a bitch fight but you could of reply in a different way.
More Specific Thread: Is is simple to navigate back to pure Windows XP OS after....
....I've installed the Ubuntu 9.10, Or will I have to always boot in the Ubuntu and then open Windows XP within Ubuntu? I heard that Linux will allow me to be able to do that. Is that true?

I prefer that it would be less customizeable, just have very specific things I want to do with it, so how it is in its default setup would be the way I would learn it and use it. (I won't want to spend hours and hours do customizing.)
Also, this Acer Netbook is for Writing a book, having some Gaming go on and really it doesn't have a fast enough CPU for the game I need to play (Urban Terror). I was hoping that if i run Urban Terror in Ubuntu that it would run faster...but its not terribly important..since the purchase of a desktop is happening in about 3 or 4 months. Also there are other games I'll need to play on a comp with at least a 2.3 CPU. (I'm a dedicated gamer, but I also work for myself)..And it would be nice to know that once I've installed the Ubuntu on this Acer Netbook; can I if I want to easily boot just in Windows XP also if I need 2 after the Ubuntu 9.10 install? At this point I'm quite experienced in Windows and PCs in general, I guess I'm just not wanting to have to do go "all in" with Ubuntu 9.10. Thx guys, any thoughts? Also, have a friend here locally who can show me the basics of Ubuntu 9.10, but just the Admin stuff and not gaming necesaraly.
You don't say which version of aspire you have, but if it's a 10.1 screen with 2gb ram, I personally like suse 11.2 kde, but remember all you will get are peoples preferences. I would suggest you try a few and decide.
My favs in order are:
suse 11.2
fedora 12
ubuntu 9.04 (did not like 9.10-to many bugs).
mandriva 2009.1
hope this helps.
by the way the netbook remix on ubuntu is just an overlay to ubuntu.
