vesa drivers

No responses to my Compaq Presario 3000 question, so let me ask another: Where can I get a vesa driver for Mandrake 9.2, and how would I install it?

Thanks,

jostby

XFree86 comes with a working vesa driver, called simply vesa. If you have XFree86 installed (you probably do!) just edit your config file (usually /etc/X11/XF86Config-4) and set the driver to use by your video card to "vesa".

You may want to run lspci to see what type of device the video card is so you can chose a more appropriate driver for that device. The "vesa" driver that comes with X works but a specialized driver may have better/more features. I also saw that the compaq uses shared memory card which means you may "have to use the driver for that card and you may need some kernel support. I would start with the lscpi to get the model of the video card and go form there.

Hmmm...yes, upon Googling for a bit it seems it uses some variant of the Intel 810 chipset, so try the "i810" driver instead.

OK. Now, if I can find a useable command-line editor! (I'm new at this.) I tried a few (pico, vim, etc.) and they were horrible. I don't want to learn a new editor; all I want to do is change XF86Config-4. :-)

nano, if installed, should be very to the point and not as confusing as vi and its clones often is when you start out using them.

XF86Config-4

nano. OK. Now, if I could find /etc/X11/XF86Config-4. It's not there.

vi

use vi (vi /etc/X11/XF86Config in console) to edit your XF86Config file. Typing in just /etc/X11/XF86Config will try to execute the file, which Linux does not like. Hope that helped some!

Thanks to all. But, I still can't find XF86Config, XF86Config-4, or anything like it, anywhere!?
