Vaio widescreen monitor really weird

I just installed ubuntu on my Sony Vaio laptop T-series which, granted, is a bit over three years old. The laptop has a small widescreen monitor. The middle part of the monitor, the size and shape of a regular non-widescreen monitor, displays perfectly fine. However, the sides is where it gets funky.

The right and left sides, each a strip about an inch and a half wide, it simply repeats the inch and a half from the edge of the regular screen. Now, here's the interesting part. If I click and drag my mouse on an area in either of these strips, that spot turns into what it is supposed to look like on a normal widescreen monitor. But then when I move my mouse over to the other side, it turns back.

And, occasionally, the normal non-widescreen monitor will suddenly appear on the left-hand side of the screen while the strip on the right will double in width effectively combining their powers captain-planet-esque.

I tried changing the screen resolution but that changes nothing and I've looked all over the web and have found nothing that even comes close.

Your X server probably uses wrong settings. You'll have to modify settings in your xorg.conf file to reflect your LCD.

Thank you! I fiddled with the xorg.conf settings, convinced Linux that my 13" monitor was really a 19" CRT, but it worked.

Thank you
