Question Using the laptop touchpad with Fedora Linux on an hp 6730b laptop

I recently installed Fedora 13 on my hp 6730b laptop alongside Windows 7 on an extended partition. Everything's working fine but I can't click using the synaptic touchpad. The cursor is moving around fine using the touchpad but to click I need to use the left button. The touchpad works fine when I boot Windows 7 (I mean I can click on it and all).

No big deal, just a mite irritating to have to use the left button to click when I'm so used to doing it from the touchpad itself.

I'm not familiar with Fedora 13 so this may not help but you've been a long time waiting for help ...

Do you have a /usr/share/hal/fdi/policy/10osvendor/11-x11-synaptics.fdi file and a /etc/hal/fdi/policy directory? If so you could copy 11-x11-synaptics.fdi to /etc/hal/fdi/policy and experiment with <merge key="input.x11_options.TapButton1" type="string">1</merge> and maybe similar for TapButton2 ... just some thoughts to explore and maybe some strings to netsearch for ...

Nope tried through the GUI and then even did an ls -l of the /usr/share/hal/fdi/policy/10osvendor directory but there's no synaptics.fdi file there.

Googled it up and found the x11 file at http://ubuntuforums.org/archive/inde...t-1006947.html.
Then touched a synaptics.fdi file at etc/hal/fdi/policy like you said and did a gedit and copied the code there.

The <merge key="input.x11_options.TapButton1" type="string">1</merge> doesn't seem to work from the shell. It says "syntax error near token 1"

I don't know what that means. Sorry if I sound like I need to be bottle-fed but I'm just picking up linux.

Any help would be welcome.

Did you try from the desktop panel "System>Preferences>Mouse>Touchpad>Enable mouse clicks with touchpad" ?
