It'd help if you knew what kind of video and sound cards are in there. You should be able to find that out by looking in the control panel in windows. You could also type lspci at the command prompt in Ubuntu...it'll output a list of everything on the PCI bus in your machine.

Does your /etc/X11/xorg.conf have a section that looks like this?

Section "Monitor"
Indentifier "Monitor1"
HorizSync 31 - 48
VertRefresh 50-60
ModelName "1024X768@60HZ"
Option "DPMS"
VendorName "--> VESA"
UseModes "Modes1"
EndSection

I got that from a page about installing Gentoo on the same Acer computer you listed

It's the HorizSync and VertRefresh ranges that usually are key in determining the resolution and proper refresh rate.

I don't know much about sound, but I'm sure if you do a Google search for "sound" in the Ubuntu Forums, you should be able to find something good.
