Toshiba memory card reader under Suse 10.1

Ok, I've spent hours searching here, and google trying to find an answer with no success. I have a Toshiba laptop running Suse 10.1. The laptop has a 5 in 1 bridge media adapter built in. It works fine under Winblows, but it does absolutely nothing in Suse. I've seen a few "fixes" that helped others but they didn't work for me. I'm not all that linux savvy so the easiest solution would be great! But if I have to compile and edit config files, then I'll need step by step instructions. I've done it before, but I don't know what many of the config files are, nor what they do. I'm a KDE gui user.

Does anyone know how I can get the card reader to work? I'd prefer it to automount when I pop a card in like everything else does when I put in a medium. It sux to have to load Winblows just to copy some photos from my camera card.

I'm running Suse 10.1 on a Toshiba Satellite model M55-S3292, and I normally use Smart Gui for package management and upgrades if that means anything.

Thanx for any help anyone can provide.

The driver for that controller should be in the 2.6.17 kernel, according to this web site. If your kernel is at that level or above, then your distro may not have enabled the functionality (or you may need the setpci command shown on the above web site). If you are using an older kernel, it's time to upgrade.

Hmmm. I'll look into that, but according to that site, it doesn't work with XD cards. That's unfortunately what I'm trying to read from. My slot supports them, but if that driver doesn't, it won't help. But I do not have that version of the kernel. Mine is 2.6.16.21-0.13, and I don't see a newer one listed in my Smart updates. Is there an optional smart update source that has the latest kernel, or has Suse not released one yet?

Thanx for the help!

It looks like later kernels are available, though they may not be stable. I don't know if there's a better source for these, as I don't have SuSE installed at the moment.

As far as support for other types of flash, the problem is that these internal chipsets (those that don't interface to the USB bus) are proprietary. If there are no open docs, there's no driver possible. I suggest you pick up a cheap (typically under $20) USB flash reader.

The chipset in question is being reverse engineered here: tifmxx

Unfortunately, the driver isn't completely stable and only supports SD cards at the moment.
