toshiba debian install - freezes

i'm trying to install debian 3.1 onto my laptop - toshiba satellite 1115-s107, which is currently running windows xp, p4 processor 1.8ghz, 512mb ram. i get the cd to boot, and get through the opening language, country, keyboard menus. it then gets to a dialog box titled "detecting hardware to find cd-rom drives", followed by a status bar, and the following description "loading module 'yenta socket' for 'O2 Micro Inc. OZ6933 Cardbus Controller'...". it keeps freezing at 2%. i tried the boot parameter "linux hw-detect/start_pcmcia=false" but that doesnt help.

any ideas?
thanks
