to install linux to Laptop which has rom boot ,cdrom and usb boot
Hello all
Need to install OS to old laptop (i've already posted a question regarded a low end linux OS and thanks all for the help)..My HP omnibookXE3 has CD-ROm but not working ,has no usb boot and no rom boot .
So now how do i have to install linux onto my laptop..
>>>>>>i've decided to install puppy but with the above problems i hav no option except floppy ...I really dont know how to do that ...
Is there any other way to install?????????
If you can set the bios to usb boot, which your subject says that you have,
then the puppy cd should boot & run.
Are you happy with that, or do you want to install it to the hdd as well ?.
Edit : pushing F12 on boot-up often gives the option
to boot with a usb drive.

Installing linux on a machine with a broken CD-ROM and no option to boot from USB is going to be difficult.
I'd take the machine apart, and see if I can replace the CD rom (it would be OK if the replacement didn't fit the case, it is just to boot from). Then try booting from that.
If that failed, I'd take out the HDD, install it in a USB enclosure, and install linux on it by using another computer. Then put it back.
Another idea: If the PC is running windows, take a look at UNetbootin (You'll probably need to D/L the windows version as I assume you are not running linux yet)
