Suse v10.0 Mouse Recognition

Using an old Dell INspiron 52100 and Suse v10.0, lately I've been experiencing intermittent recognition of the external mouse. Sometimes have to re-boot three or more times to finally get the machine to recognize that the external mouse is attached.

- Testing has shown that the built in mouse pad works fine - every time but I prefer to use the external mouse.

- Testing with the old Windows software shows there's nothing wrong with the expernal mouse.

- Testing has shown that Suse v10.0 will not port power to the expernal mouse; no red light at all

- Testing has shown that the external multi-port adapter is not at fault; the printers work

Any ideas out there?
