Unhappy SuSE install hangs on hp pavilion ze4145

i'm trying to install SuSE 9.0 on my HP Pavilion ZE4145

its currently running on windows xp pro

I partitioned the hard drive using PartitionMagic 8.1, the new table is:

4.5 gig EXT2 empty partition (designated suse partition)
0.5 gig swap partition
5.9 gig NTFS windows xp partition
29 gig FAT 32 data partition (to be used from both linux and xp, as a storage partition)
50 meg FAT bootmagic partition

the distribution cds are working (installed with no problems on a different laptop)

however, when i insert the suse boot cd in the pavilion, it displays the welcome screen (with all the different languages) and hangs there. the keyboard stops responding and i have to hard reset.

i tried starting the installation from a suse 9.0 floppy, hangs the same way

i also spent around five hours looking for help on message boards, howtos, various doc sites, didnt find anything to solve the problem

help, please?

I've got the hp pavilion 4125, and I didn't have any problems. I downloaded the 9.0 boot disk, and everything went smooth, I've even got battery support!! woot...

the only thing I can't get configured is my wireless card, but thats for a different thread.

I've read that you might need the 8.0 boot disk...but I didn't need it, I downloaded it and burned it or Justin (just in case).

Sorry you didn't have the same luck I did

OK I have a 4420us.
It seems to be the problem of usb legacy support; diable it in the bios. No you won't need its functionality....

As we are here with the same series laptops (with Radeon IGP 320/340/345M), has anyone gotten 3d hardware support to work????

thanks, mr C, but i already tried that, and still no luck. Do you have any other suggestions?
Some other people mentioned that the PCMCIA Legacy Support should be turned off, but such an option does not exist in the BIOS.

err usb legacy normally clears up any freezing I've encountered....
how long did you wait before you reset? On a sony vio on suse8.1 live, I waited precisely 8 minutes once...

Sorry I really don't know whats going on here either....

i've waited probably up to 10 minutes, but that gives me hope, i'll just let i sit there for longer. But, with the vaio, were there any signs of it thinking or anything? Because i couldn't see anything, no blinking lights, nothing, the screen just had the welcome screen and that was all.
Thanks

I have spents many days if not weeks trying to figure this one out.

Hi, i am having the same problem with a Compaq 2180, it has the igp320. suse enterprise server install perfectly, but not suse 9 professional. it hangs and stalls at the welcome messages. but the more interesting thing is that i had it installed until i had to reformet my laptop, now it doesn't want to install anymore.

what i did was i first installed suse enterprise server 8 and then i installed suse 9 professional over it. it worked great. even the wireless card was recognized. the display was full size but no 3D. i read from ati that 3D for the IGP's video cards would need to be provided by the manufactures, and in this case compaq/HP are probably not going to make linux drivers since they don't support it on our laptops. when suse 9 was installed i loved it. but now i can't get it working again.

unfortuanately i can't remember exactly how i did it. i have tried many different boot disks etc... i came close again to getting it properly installed.

my lastest atempt was this....install suse 8, and the put in the suse 9 cd. then in yast2, change the installation source to the cd with suse 9 on it. and turn off the other locations. then i did an upgrade, it went through looked like it installed and upgraded and when i booted it back up again once i logged in i didn't have any programs visible. i have since deleted that linux partition, but that i what i will try again. it just a matter of finding the right sequence.

i know for a fact that this worked for me before, i just can't remember the exact procedure.

ok to be really honest, I've never used suse. However, (this may sound silly) can you do a text install? Meaning, does the welcome screen flash before your boot: ?

the welcome screen comes up before you get the chance to choose the installation options such as manual installation for text install.
