SuSE 9.2 will not display on Latitude CPx

Loading SuSE 9.2 Pro on a Dell Latitude CPX. The installation goes fine, but when the system is started, if the login screen is shown, I can only log in under failsafe mode. Even after changing runlevel to 3, and stopping X, sax2 will note run...any suggestions?

This can happen if you ask X windows to start in a resolution that may not be technically supported. For instance, regardless of whether or not your laptop monitor supports, say, 1280x1024, if the video driver doesn't support it, you'll just get a blank screen.

My advice would be to edit the /etc/X11/xorg.conf (or XFree86.conf) and make sure that in the "Screen" section, you aren't trying to start at a resolution higher than what the driver supports. A "safe" bet would be start at 1024x768 and work from there.

BTW, I've used SAX2 in both SuSE 8.2 and 9.2 and I still ended up having to hack the xorg.conf file afterwords to get the best results.
