sony laptop grt170 i810 sound

I installed Red Hat 9, all updates, no sound. Sound card detected but locked up when trying to play test file.

Installed alsa, now I get sound when in a terminal I hit backspace with nothing left to delete. Just that beeping buzz. But no sound when playing a cd or anywhere esle.

I ran alsa mixer and the only items muted are mic, mic boos, and external amp power down.

I am not sure what the problem is. Any help would be GREAT!!!!!
