Slackware 14.2 UEFI install on acer laptop with secure boot enabled.
Gday guys i recently just installed Slackware 14.2 on an acer E 15 start laptop (ES1-512-C0GA), and i thought id share it with you.
I first installed it under legacy bios but the toouchpad didnt work so i decided to install it under UEFI instead.
I have never installed linux (of any flavour) on UEFI before so i thought ill give it a shot for once and the UEFI install took care of the touchpad problem so i went ahead with it.
First i disabled secure boot and got rid of windows 8.1. You will find plenty of tutorials on this with google so dont ask me about how to do it.
I had to set an admin password in the end for my UEFI firmware.
When i installed i used a custom boot usb to boot the os. (It wont boot without one).... SUCCESS!!
NetworkManager would not let me enable networking as it did in 14.1 so i got rid of it and compiled WICD and connected to the net without problems.
Next i needed to get elilo to boot slackware 14.2 without the stinking boot usb to help so i went into my UEFI firmware by pressing F2 at boot and enabled secure boot again then going to security
and selecting "select an UEFI file as trusted for executing"
You then get...
HDD0 and USB0
select HDD0 and enter.
Then select <EFI> enter
Then <Slackware> enter
Then you will see elilo.efi select and enter
Give it a name i used slackware and enter then hit yes, enter and hit F10 to save and exit.
Byebye custom boot usb to boot the huge kernel. (Note for the slow, keep the usb as you may need it later.)
If you manage to get NetworkManager to work and you have problems getting wireless internet dongles to work, then go back to UEFI firmware and go to main and deselect xHCI support to disable USB3.0 controller. This worked with other linux operating systems in the past.
I only have two problems left.
First is when right clicking with my trackpad for applications on the desktop i get an "Edit launcher for the program" rather than the program that i want to execute. (This is not a problem when selecting things from the dropdown menu).
Secondly, (and most important is the os freezes on shutdown sequence).
Slackware never had this problem with 14.1 but other flavours of linux have in the past. With grub i go to defaults and change "quiet splash" to "acpi=off". (lilo has never had this problem). I really havent used elilo before so i will try to do the same sort of thing, but later, im burnt out.
Oh, by the way, hello, im Kris.
