I recently purchased a new sub notebook/netbook the aspire one 756. I'm supprised to find little info on this pc. It comes with the celeron 877 CPU which is very fast 2gig ddr3 ram (upgraded to 4gb) 320 gb hdd and 11.6 display with hdmi. My biggest question is one I cannot get the option to boot from the internal sd slot and two why is there not a lot of people talking about or using this pc. Best buy sells this for 249.99 just 20.00 more then the amd c60 model but the performance is mind blowing by comparison. Just to put into prospective I can play aion, raiderz, and guild wars 2 with no problem. All windows functions work fast and Netflix he works flawlessly

I think you should be able to boot from an USB-device, but I don't know if it is (in general) possible to boot from the SD-slot. If it is possible, you would find some information when you take a look in the BIOS (you would then have to enable this option if it's available).

Yes you are correct USB boots fine I want to install mint to a sd card. I have done this in previous ao models that use the atom CPU along with the asus eee model buy I can't seem to find any option to use the sd to boot this model uses the insyde h20 bios I had hoped there was a update or mod to allow it. Does anyone know if the sd card reader is on the USB controller or what bus it is on
No problem I wasn't very clear in my post. I don't want to mess with my boot table as my recovery is on my hdd for win 7 I have made a recovery USB key but I have a lot of large games I don't want to have to redownload (mmorpg gamer... Alas lots of downloading and updating and I only have 1.5mbps net) USB ports are in demand on this pc, it has 3 and one is for my fan the other my mouse and they are not placed the best being in the front sides of the netbook sd card is completely invisible once inserted, makes a great option for a nice Linux install on a ultra III sd card
Well after some careful and upsetting research i have determined that what i want to do with this netbook will not happen. I have learned that the sd card reader in this model (possibly other similar models)is not usb it is scsi (weird i know). I looked up the device and it is listed as Broadcom sd scsi disk controller which to my dismay is not tied to any bootable systems. it would appear that acer took a dive on these models with the sd card slot and made it just that, a sd card reader and thats it. Ohhh well i guess im stuck with windows 7 because none of my games (save for wow using wine) will not run under linux, this is sad as i just discovered android x86 which was promising for a very fast booting os for basic tasks and videos online.

You could give dualboot a shot. Many people do it and it will not distroy your Windows. You can decrease your Windows-partition with gparted and then install Linux.
Another idea would be to install Linux to the SD-card but put it's bootloader to the MBR of /dev/sda/, this should be possible, it doesn't touch your Windows, only overwrites the MBR (which can easily be restored if necessary).
That is not a bad idea markus and may very well be the way I go, can you tell me if it becomes nessasary to restore my mbr how would I do this, I am assuming using the win 7 install disc to boot recovery and repair option, is there an easier way
I found that there are tools, for example "MBRTool" for Windows, as far as I understand you can use it to save your MBR to an external storage and restore it later. But I would recommend to start another thread with this subject "how to save my MBR before configuring dualboot" because this would be an interesting subject for many others.
BTW: I have for all my computers a printed (on paper) version of the partitiontable. Simply
Code:
fdisk -l > partitiontable.txt
will create such a file (don't store it on the computer, in a case of emergency you'll need it also if you can't access the disk!).
I'd take a virtual machine boot it up with your choice of OS. Then attach a usb to sd adapter to the vm. Then install the os to the vm.
Take that sd to your system. Install the sd card in. Do a full power down and then boot to bios. The sd should appear as a hard drive choice.
Not all sd cards can be made bootable. There may be or may not be an option to boot to the sd slot but most can.
Scsi is how modern distro's use media.
I have created at live Linux on sd to attempt to test this and there is no option to boot from sd. From what I've learned in order to be bootable the sd card controller has to be on the USB controller or the bios won't see it as a USB hdd. In my case even in the boot menu or bios with a bootable sd card inserted the sd reader does not show at all. I started to install mint 13 kde with netbook desktop today and put the boot record on my hdd however there seems to be a problem with my wifi and mint/Ubuntu 12 and up. My card is detected but won't connect to any networks, after googling it seems that the ath9k driver has issues and that's what my netbook uses. I've only ever uses Ubuntu and the like, anyone suggest another Linux that is user friendly, I'm thinking about chromium lime any thoughts
in this thread http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...rk-4175437787/ I've resently explained how to connect to Wifi with wpa_supplicant, I'd suggest that you try that out. wpa_supplicant has the advantage that it comes with verbose errormessages, hopefully this will help.
When using wpa_supplicant, be sure to disable any networkmanager or what ever tools there are with your desktop-environment.
I decided having a fast booting Linux for simple stuff might be handy so after some research I downloaded xpud and created a live USB, alas Linux must hate this model acer, when I try to boot it I get the error "ee no display detected" and am referred to the xorg txt file for errors. I googled this and there is little info on how to go about fixing it and what is there did not work for other users. I think at this point android x86 is the only thing that works Linux wise, so last night I done the unthinkable, I ordered my 15.00 windows 8 pro upgrade. I have acronis doing a full backup then I'm taking the plunge, seems windoze 8 has pretty fast boot times and runs ok so I'm going to try it, just hope my games work. Ohhh @ markus my router is not secured would the method you mentioned still work without security and is there any other Linux that has a netbook desktop, windows 7 works ok with the 11.6 screen but my mint 11 is very tiny (and works fine for some reason) what about easy peasy any thoughts
I have a Lenovo x100e Subnotebook with 11.6 screen. I have Slackware64 (it's an AMD 64bit architecture) installed and use Xmonad as windowmanager. Formerly I had fvwm2 which is also very good. But I would not try big desktop environments like KDE or Gnome on such a small screen. You will need a windowmanager which is configurable in a way that those things that have to be big enough are big enough. But it will take some time to get this done.
wpa_supplicant should also work without any encryption, there's a manpage for wpa_supplicant as well as for wpa_supplicant.conf, I'd recommend to read there. There should also be a very explanatory template for wpa_supplicant.conf in your /usr/doc/wpa_supplicant/ directory
