[UNSOLVED] Satellite M30-742 Backlight doesn't turn off

Hi,
I have a Toshiba M30-742 laptop ( with Phoenix BIOS ). Am running gentoo on it. All seems fine. However there is a problem with the monitor not turning off. ACPI has been turned on in the kernel and also toshiba_acpi is enabled.
When I close the lid the monitor switches off automatically. I am running acpid, however I haven't configured any scripts for the LID close event. I can see that the lid close and open states and events are recognised properly by the acpid. /proc/acpi/toshiba and /proc/acpi show correct events.

What I have already tried:

1. xset dpms force off (display blanks but backlight is still on)

2. toshiba-utils (they don't support phoenix bios)

3. xscreensaver power management ( same symptoms as 1 above)

4. Have googled a lot.

The laptop has an nVidia Go5200 card. I am running binary drivers from nvidia (actually "emerge nvidia-kernel" etc. in gentoo). The DPMS option has been set in my xorg.conf.

Please give me some pointers to solve this problem.

Thanks....

Hi,
Well that problem has been solved. I was actually using an older version of the driver. I installed the latest 7676 version and the problem went away. But alas!!! a new one came up. Now the monitor won't switch on after blanking. Only a VT switch brings it back. I have to do ALT+CTL+F1 and then ALT+CTL+F7 to get the display back. Touchpad activity or keyboard events don't seem to bring the display back on.

Any suggestions????

Thanks a lot!
