Running GPL'd OBD-II software for Maemo (Nokia N800) - cheaply

I've discovered a great GNU OBD2 software package for the Nokia N800: Carman. The problem is, this s/w package is said to only work with an expensive $190 USD ElmScan 5 / firefly combination.

There are lots of bluetooth OBD2 dongles out there for under $100. Has anyone verified if any of them will work with Carman?

Are there any other bluetooth OBD2 options for the Nokia N800?

I really want something that supports bluetooth 2.0, because a video review of Carman / ElmScan 5 in action shows screen updates on the guages to happen quite slowly.
