I would recommend you to use CentOS 5.5, if you want to go for a free version.

skc ?
You do know that unless you BUY$$$ a license there will NEVER be any security updates for it .

that is why CentOS 5.5 was suggested

no problem with the hardware that i can see

call red hat tech support that you paid for with the license

gnome should have not had a problem starting on the first boot
did you install a GUI ?? you might NOT have installed Gnome .

Not paying close attention, are you??

RedHat ENTERPRISE is something that you PAY FOR. Unless you buy a license (thereby getting support/patches/etc.), you will not be able to upgrade it, or get support. Don't care if your 'friend' gave it to you or not...you're STILL not paying for support/upgrades, so you won't be getting them.

CentOS is essentially the same thing as RedHat enterprise, but community supported. Download and install that. Also, think about why you NEED RedHat enterprise on a laptop. What, exactly, do you need RHEL for? If it's just for learning Linux, you don't need it...ANY distro will do. In fact, most of the community-supported distros will work BETTER on a laptop. CentOS/RHEL are server-related distros, and as such, support such hardware. Wifi, webcams, etc., are things that you don't normally need on a 24/7 server, are they?

Since your last distro had the hardware recognized, and so (probably) does CentOS. What have you tried to CONFIGURE the device??? Did you actually try to set up the interface??
http://www.centos.org/docs/5/html/De...rk-config.html

Again, server-based distros typically aren't meant for things that AREN'T servers, like laptops. Again, if you're just learning Linux, ANY distro will work. If you can't configure the interface, try a consumer-grade distro, like Ubuntu/Kubuntu, Mandriva, openSUSE, etc.
