Repair or Buy new machine

After 2 good years of use I had the backlight on my laptop go out.

Should I spend the money to get the backlight replaced or should I spend some extra money and buy a whole new laptop? Also, how long should I expect a laptop to last?

The repair will cost between $200 and $400 and I will probably spend about $1000 on a new laptop if I decide to get a new one.

The current machine's main specs are:
  • 512 MB RAM
  • 100GB Hard drive
  • 1.7 GHz pentium M processor
  • intel i915 graphics card
  • Intel® PRO/Wireless 2200 802.11BG WLAN

Thanks for the help

3 years is a good run for any computer.

2 isn't bad, but the backlight on the laptop shouldn't be a fatal issue.
You could get a USB light or something if you work in dark conditions a lot. You can always take it somewhere non crazy and ask them how much they think it will cost to fix. IT probably isn't under waranty anymore.
