You might try telling us exactly what isn't working, what it is or isn't doing, error messages (if any), etc. so someone can help you fix the problem. To tell the truth, it would be impossible to recommend a distro for a particular machine. It's much easier, instead, to work out the minor glitches with what you've chosen.
OK, I've done a little research for you. If you go back to Ubuntu (the video was the only problem, right?), you need to go to the ATI website and download the Linux drivers. (you will need to do that with most distros- ATI and nVidia require their own drivers).
