Unhappy problem after making kernel on a dell 630 inspiron with FC4

Need help, I got a dell inspiron, i tried to make kernel 2.6.15 under fedora core 4, it all well fine till i rebooted. I did it coz it has a problem with the soundcard.
check link

first i unpacked kernel in /root/ then i "make menuconfig" i saved all chages.
I did "make all"
then "make modules_install"
then "make install" & I changed /etc/rc.sysinit so I changed added newlines after this comments:
# Sound
#for module in `/sbin/modprobe -c | LC_ALL=C #awk '/^alias[[:space:]]+snd-card-[[:digit:]]
#[[:space:]]/ { print $3 }'` $audio; do
# load_module $module
modprobe snd_hda_intel
echo -n $" audio"

i saved changes & i rebooted.

bootloader (grub) was chaged, before:
Fedora Core (2.6.11-1.1369_FC4)
Windows xp

now:
Fedora Core (2.6.15)
Fedora Core (2.6.11-1.1369_FC4)
Windows xp

Fedora Core (2.6.15) was booted, it booted almost nomally, graphical screens were not shown, everything were loadind just fine till a bleud screen appeared saying:

"I cannot start the X server (your graphical interface). It is likely that it is not set up correctly. Would u like to view the X server output to diagnose the problem?
YES NO"
I put Yes, then it says:

X window System version 6.8.2
release Date: 9 february 2005
x protocol version 11, revision 0, release 6.8.2
build operating System: linux 2.4.21-27.0.2.Elsmp i686 [ELF]
Current Operatin System: linux.Localdomain 2.6.15 #1 mon may
build date: 13 may 2005
build host: decompose.build.redhat.com

before reporting problems, check http://wiki.x.org.

i put exit

another blue screen appčared

would u like me to try to run the x configuration program? Note that ull need root password for this.
yes i put then password is required i typed then it start to print:

I'm not sure what you did to break your X server, but you didn't properly configure your kernel. You shouldn't unpack and configure your kernel in your /root parition. It should be done in /usr/src. After that you should run "make clean" before anything else to make sure you don't have any left overs messing with your setup. Finally if you run "make install install", a new feature with the 2.6.xx kernels, you don't need to run both "make modules_install" and "make install". The steps are combined for convenince.

If thats the only error you got, it sounds like we've fixed the sound problem, now you just need to get the hardware setting in kernel config right so it will boot.

So I know this is starting to look like a pain in the butt, but I think we're getting closer. Follow the steps as I outlined, except this time run "make oldconfig" before you do "make menuconfig." This will setup your new kernel exactly like your old working one (so make sure you delete anything installed by your non-working kernel, except the sources of course, you'll need those to compile). Any changes from the old one to the new one you will be prompted on. If you don't know its pretty much safe to just compile it in there or modulize it, if thats an option.
