power consumption: acpi vs apm ---> apm is the winner by far for suspend mode

On suspend mode, both of my laptops (IBM T40p and T42) have very
low performances using acpi. A fully charged laptop usually doesn't last more than 15 hours in standby mode!

However when I switch to apm, both laptops last for a few days!

Not sure if it's a hardware issue or software.

I have always experimented these issues (kernel-2.6.18, 2.6.19 2.6.22 and even 2.6.26).

Please let me know your experiences.

M.B.

I wish APM stayed around, it isn't really an option on most new laptops. I use it on this old Dell C600, I really prefer the power management to be handled by the hardware as much as possible. The problem with this usually is being unable to change the scheme while the system is running, but on this Dell I can hit Fn+F1 and the BIOS comes up. I can control the hard disk timeout, backlight timeout and everything from the BIOS, which means I don't have to worry about the OS controlling anything power related.

iirc, there was an issue with thinkpads and suspend a while back--there's a solution around if you google.
