Hello everybody,
I'm new to Linux--I've abandoned Windows and am trying to put openSUSE 10.2 on my old laptop. It's a Dell Inspiron 3800 and has a 10GB H.D. and 128 MB of memory. Whenever I get to a certain page of the command line installation, (GUI doesn't work--not enough memory) the SUSE installer tells me I need to activate a pagefile in order to run YaST to continue, since I have so little memory. What do I type in as the page file, or won't this system work on this old of a laptop?
You just don't have the horses to run suse with that hardware. Even if you mange to get it installed, suse would perform very badly on your laptop.
I think a better option for you is a distro called Vector Linux:
Thanks for the post. I have Dream Linux on it now (Mac OS X look-alike) and it seems to like that. But how do I install a program? Do you know of any other beginner sites for new Linux people like me that are used to Windows? (Basic differences, how to install things, etc.)
Check the files in the Linux Tutorials right here at LinuxQuestions.org. Many of those are written to help new people take advantage of their Windows experience.
Draco,
There are HEAPS of resources out there you just need to look for them.
Unfortunately there is no one site which will solve all your problems. (except maybe forums!)
So you would be better off to search Google for each independent issue you come across.
Just a note - maybe installing a more mainstream distribution would be good to start with. Just try to find a distro which is not overly feature rich.
Good Luck and Welcome to the world of linux!
Hey everybody,
Thanks for the help. I've done some looking on the net, but it hasn't really helped me. Is there a way to install Knoppix 5.1 to the hard disk? I've looked through all the programs and I couldn't find the installer. I found something on the internet about a 'knoppix-installer' command, but it didn't work. I'd just like to install a Knoppix version to disk in case I forget the Live CD sometime and don't have a system at all. Also, I tried to install the Knoppix Kill Bill editon, but I read on the internet that the designer doesn't want people to be lazy and put it to a hard drive, since that would ruin all his hard work. I just would like to have it on the drive anyways, as a failsafe, you see? How do I do it? Is there some command to do it, (I don't know UNIX) or is it really impossible for us to install that system?
