Packard Bell Easynote, FC5.. Endless list of problems.

Right so, in my wisdom I gave up on the 1.2200 kernel a bit too soon and did some drastic measures which I still regret. Now I'm happily running on the newest, 2.6.18-1.2239.fc5 kernel, and everything seemed to work smoothly... But no.

I used to run this machine wirelessly with ndiswrapper, but now it doesen't seem to work anymore, that was with the 2.6.17-1.2178(I think) kernel. Now I am getting a lot of the problems that a lot of other people have with ndiswrapper, but none of the solutions, I have seen have worked for me. Right now I'm not even sure if the NIC is working or the system just thinks it is.

The chipset of the wireless NIC is RaLink rt2500 revision 1.

iwconfig gives this:

Code:
Warning: Driver for device wlan0 has been compiled with version 20
of Wireless Extension, while this program supports up to version 19.
Some things may be broken...

wlan0 IEEE 802.11g ESSID:off/any
          Mode:Auto Frequency:2.412 GHz Access Point: Not-Associated
          Bit Rate:11 Mb/s Tx-Power:20 dBm Sensitivity=-120 dBm
          RTS thr:2347 B Fragment thr:2346 B
          Power Management:off
          Link Quality:0 Signal level:0 Noise level:0
Rx invalid nwid:0 Rx invalid crypt:0 Rx invalid frag:0
          Tx excessive retries:0 Invalid misc:0 Missed beacon:0
iwconfig doesen't support version 20? Ok, I think I had that error when it last worked so, I'm pretty sure that it's not that important. Obviously the NIC is there but can't connect. I know for a fact that the wlan is working, cause my mother's laptop works just a treat.

dmesg shows, among other things, this:

I've bolded the wlanbits so it will be easier to see, I might have been running linux for a while, but I'm still not too good at configurations, so please bear with me here

I have read in some places that you should not run the

ndiswrapper -m
ndiswrapper -l

Instead make a file somewhere, this I haven't tried, but I am quite upset with this thing now and I'm not quite thinking straight so I'll take a break until monday or so.

The next problem I have is that I seem to be quite stupid when it comes to google.. I can't find information on how to get openGL and whatnot to run properly on this chipset.. I did actually give up on this the last time, but since XGL is out there, it looks mighty tempting. I have a quite good graphics card in here as is evident from my attempts at running xgl under berrylinux live, it is slow, but it draws the graphics out faster than on my stationary box(which also has no wifi atm, but another day another grief) which is impressive seing as this thing is rather old and sluggish, and my stationary is more or less state of the art.

Now from lspci I get:

Code:
00:00.0 Host bridge: Intel Corporation 82852/82855 GM/GME/PM/GMV Processor to I/O Controller (rev 02)
00:00.1 System peripheral: Intel Corporation 82852/82855 GM/GME/PM/GMV Processor to I/O Controller (rev 02)

01:02.0 Ethernet controller: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. RTL-8139/8139C/8139C+ (rev 10)
The obvious was to me to check intel's site, since I know they have linux drivers available, I found the one that matches mine, installed it somewhat successfully(this is all some time ago so I'm not really clear on the details, I've yet to try again since as I mentioned I haven't really found any information to help me through..) but then upon testing with glxgears it still gave the same FPS rating, somewhere in the 500 FPS region.

Any hints and tips are welcome.

Now this is my biggest problem and it is really a problem that I think there's no good solution to, but I'll try.

This version of the Easynote came with 1.3GhZ, 256MB ram and I think a 128 MB graph card, I think it has some sort of shared memory technology, but I'm not sure. I really like Fedora Core, and if possible I'd like to run it on my laptop, if not Berry Linux is a possibility. I have a problem with response, it's somewhat sluggish and slow to respond, it swaps quite a lot and so on.

The obvious answer is to trim down the system, but how far can I trim it down before I loose the functions that I like to have around?

I'll openly admit to not having looked too closely into this subject, but if anyone would be kind and spoint me along I'd appreciate it

whew, all done, there might be more problems hidden around, but so far I haven't encountered those, and hopefully when I do I'll figure out how to fix it myself.

So download the wireless-tools source rpm for Fedora Core 6 and rebuild for Fedora Core 5;

http://download.fedora.redhat.com/pu...-1.fc6.src.rpm

rpmbuild --recompile --rebuild --define 'dist .fc5' wireless-tools-28-1.fc6.src.rpm

Build yourself a custom kernel which supports this Intel graphics chipset or try using one of the third party repo sites, for example;

http://atrpms.net/dist/fc5/915resolution/
