I really don't know how to explain this. The sound worked under Xp. But not in debian sid, there's no better way to explain it.
I have alsamixer installed, and i've tried unmuting the channels. but still no result.
Are you sure the relevant channels are not muted? Is alsa mixer displaying information for the right audio device (in case you've got more than 1 audio card)?

I can clearly see in your screenshot of alsamixer that your channels are muted (this is what the MM at the bottom of the volume controls indicates). Press the M-key on all of them (it should switch from MM to a number) and try it again.

Ooh god, what an embarassing mistake.
All this frustration, and it was all so simple. Thanks to you all, for not giving up on me. Someday I will get there!

Ok, I will. But! One last question: To enable the sound i must enable the sound in the thinkpad console.
This enables the sound, but it also enables a warning beep, so that whenever I reach the bottom of a page(example) It beeps out, does anyone have a suggestion on how to fix this?
