no init found, try passing init= bootarg in Maverick 10.10

I do have a serious problem in Ubuntu 10.10 on my Dell Inspiron Mini 1010 for which the best netbook system is the 10.10 version.

Yes, "no init found, try passing init= bootarg" now.

I read a message from 2008 about the same problem, but now this thread has been closed, reading as follows:

Quote:
The message "Kernel panic: no init found. Try passing init= option to kernel" probably means the kernel can not find the root file system. Please try to modify the "root=" kernel parameter in the grub entry. Make sure that the value of the "root=" kernel parameter point to the right root-file-system device/partition.
Is this the actual solution to solve my problem? If so, how do I do this, how can I find back the parameter, how can modify, how can I init= option to kernel, I really don't know.

Please advise, as I need this small laptop for my job.

Thanks in advance.

The problem has been solved now through the SystemRescueCD, so everything works fine again on my Dell mini laptop.

Ubuntu 10.10 is obsolete and not supported anymore, I would strongly recommend to install a supported version.

Thanks TobiSGD, but I have to tell that already a rather long time ago, I controlled with the official Ubuntu site the best possible operating system for the small Dell Inspiron Mini 1010 (just have a look on internet how small), the hardware is reasonable, but even according to Ubuntu itself the best possible and actually only operating system for this small laptop is Maverick 10.10 netbook version. In the meantime Ubuntu has stopped developing separate netbook versions.
I can only tell that I tried to upgrade in the past from 10.10 to 11.04, well, impossible, I tried to install a separate 11.04, impossible, it was stuck, all for this small laptop.
It's a small one, handy, easy for my work, I only control and sometimes reply my e-mail messages and I do my work with LibreOffice, which can easily be burnt to a data DVD with my external CD/DVD player/burner, sometimes copy these files to my normal desktop (by USB etc.), with - in the meantime from last Saturday - Ubuntu 12.04 on my desktop. I agree this is a very good operating system.
But version 10.10 Maverick works fine on this small laptop for the things I am doing, just for my job, and because it is not supported any longer, I do not mind, no updates, nothing. Perhaps these attempts trying to upgrade/install version 11.04 Natty has "polluted" something, causing the problem.
I can tell you I still have the CD with Maverick 10.10 netbook version, still works. It is even still downloadable. Updates: none at all. I needed Poulsbo drivers for an acceptable screensize for this laptop, works OK, because Maverick 10.10 did not support the VGA chip hardware, but this is no problem thanks to these drivers.
Thanks for your reaction anyway.
