Linux on IBM ThinkPad
IBM THINKPAD Z60T I am running Debian only on my IBM Thinkpad laptop. This is my first time running any linux, so I don't have any clue whatsoever. I managed to get KDE running, so that's how I'm writing this. However, the refresh rate is low and I don't know how to change that and the resolution won't go above 1024 x 768. This is probably because I don't have any drivers installed. I need help setting up the drivers/configuring resolution and making colour 32-bit. Cheers guys, thanks heaps for the help. Oh yeah, forgot to add some stats: 2ghz processor with 2gb ram, and 64mb (128mb accelerated) video card. UPDATE: I tried using 915resolution but when I try saving it, it says I need write permissions. What should I do? Help mutcho appreciated.
When I try logging in as Root in KDE3.3 it says cannot login as Root.
Some LCD screens have their max resolution build in and you cannot set your resolution over this limits. You may find this usefull info on an IBM web site or either on the manual of your laptop.
In a another hand if you had not reach the limits of your LCD panel, try a sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg for Xorg server or a sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86.

@Tizzef: I was running XP before, and the resolution was 1280x768 but as I said I can't set refresh rate higher and the display is stretched to 1080x768.
@Zmyrgel: Linux-on-laptops had some good stuff, but none for the installation of Debian on my model. Thinkwiki.org ironically had someone installing Debian on my model but no instructions. He just said that everything worked fine.
Find out what video card you have and make sure that xorg.conf(or your XFree86) references the right driver and not the generic "vesa". There is a program you can run to configure this file but
I forget what its called. I think maybe "Xorg -conf"

@Dohpaz. Yes I remember entering Vesa, and that seems to be the problem. Thanks for the quick reply, and I will probly fix it today. In the meantime, I will be installing XGL + Compiz on my second Dell laptop because it has a 512mb videocard and the IBM only has 64mb. We'll see how we go.
