Question Linux on a Microsoft Surface Pro

Hello,

I would like to buy a Microsoft Surface Pro (the latest one) hoping it's possible to install Linux with no retrictions and no major drawbacks.
Could you please tell me if it's doable or if it won't be fully working because, for instance, Microsoft would use proprietary stuff that cannot be handled by Linux?

- Are all devices of the Surface Pro correctly handled by Linux? In particular the touch screen.
- Is the install a stadard procedure or does it require some complicated hacking?
- Will the Surface Pro run in an optimal manner, I mean: will the battery last at least as long as with the original OS? Will the temperature of the device be equal or below the temperature that would be with the original OS? etc.
- Are there any drawbacks buying this device to run it under a Linux distro?
- Is there any distro well known to fit well with a Surface Pro?
- Any website that could provide info on that topic?

Thanks for your feedback.

Welcome to the board.

You can answer these questions with a simple search. Don't expect us to do the research for you.

Have a look at this link, it tells you how to install Ubuntu on a surface pro.

https://www.geek.com/geek-pick/how-t...e-pro-1539262/

There are a few things to check, before you buy. Make sure you can disable secure boot. If you can't, then linux will not work on the model you choose.

Linux has supported touch screens for some time. I don't have one, I hate seeing my finger prints on the screen.
I would expect the install to be standard for a UEFI system. Once again, read through the link I posted.

Hope this helps.

general rule of thumb:
Linux works best on devices that are at least 1 year old.

Thanks for your answer.
Of course I searched before asking here. This is because I found out that it could be not 100% compliant with Linux that I came here with precise questions.

Your link is totally outdated (2013) and I need fresh answers on the specific questions I asked. So far I found only general stuff like your link.
