If you coud get a computer to boot from firewire, or use a bootdisk, then you coud put a distro on the ipod, as an alternative to knoppix o.l.

People put OSX on their iPods all the time. . .because all modern macs support booting from firewire. PCs, however, have lacking support for such a feature. I have yet to read about a motherboard that can support booting from firewire. . . but today's iPods also can use a USB interface, and some (but not all) modern motherboards can boot from USB.

Now on to the OS on iPod thingy. . .

You see, while I know people that put OSX on their iPods. . . it is a risk to do so. The iPod's hard drive is tiny, very slow, and not ment to be thrashing around to the amount that an OS would require. You can do it. . . but if I invested that kinda cash on a portable music device, I would not decrease it's life by putting a Linux install on it for "knoppix"-like uses. I would only use it for less stressful music playing and maybe a little file transfer.. .
