lenovo 4151 desktop truncation with tv hookup

I'm running ubuntu 11.04, kernel 2.6.38-8-generic, on a Lenovo 4151. When connected to my tv the bottom of the desktop is truncated. When running the classic desktop it appears I'm losing the status bar where running programs are shown. The same thing happens with the new desktop and on an empty desktop only half the trashcan appears. To narrow the problem I've hooked up several computers running either xp or ubuntu (10.10 and 11.04) and their desktops are displayed correctly. So it would appear this is an issue with the lenovo display adapter? Any ideas?
