LCD not working in Xfree Compaq Laptop

hey...im posting this again cuz its a bit urgent, i have to submit a project on linux and samba in a week and i got this laptop just for my linux stuff. when i run the xfree config utility...it doesnt detect the display. it jus says screen not found and crashes to the command line. right now it is selected as a 1024x768 display. no one else seems to be having this problem on this laptop. can anyone help? its a compaq nx9005 with a 14inch lcd with a max rez of 1024x768. thanks a load.

or should i install mandrake?. will there be a difference? red hat is preferable because its a bit less gui intensive than red hat.

can you give a little bit more information? What do you see when X crashes?
you should read through what it says, sometimes it's related to something you can easily fix...
the (EE) fields are errors if I'm not mistaken
