invalid rom error upon gentoo livecd on ppc

ok folks. i have gentoo running quite smoothly now on my thinkpad. at the moment i am attempting to install gentoo onto a new world ibook g3 and i am having some odd difficulties.

upon booting the livecd i am confronted immediately with an error: invalid rom signature. i have gone ahead and installed even after this error to what appeared to be a normal install. however, upon attempting to compile the kernel i recieve an error 135. i have attempted both manual kernel compiling as well as genkernel. both to no avail. since the ibook is my only cd burner i was forced to reinstall osx to re-burn the universal ppc cd (thought the burn process might have been the culprit). before i wipe the hd again i'd like to see if anyone has any ideas. as always, thanks in advance.
