well maybe, do you recommend another small-sized Linux version for old laptops/netbooks?

1. PCLinuxOS (14)
PCLinuxOS is a user-friendly Linux distribution with out-of-the-box support for many popular graphics and sound cards, as well as other peripheral devices. The bootable live CD provides an easy-to-use graphical installer and the distribution sports a wide range of popular applications for the typical desktop user, including browser plugins and full multimedia playback. The intuitive system configuration tools include Synaptic for package management, Addlocale to add support to many languages, Getopenoffice to install the latest OpenOffice.org, and Mylivecd to create a customised live CD.

2. Robolinux (36)
Robolinux is a user-friendly and intuitive operating system based on the latest stable release of Debian GNU/Linux. One of the project's more interesting features is the availability of a pre-configured virtual machine support pack with Windows XP or Windows 7 - a VirtualBox setup which allows the user to install and run the Windows operating system seamlessly alongside Robolinux. This is an optional add-on that must be purchased from the project's online store. Robolinux offers free-to-try live desktop media, however the project charges a fee for downloading the distribution's system installer.
gotten off of distro watch in their advance search, beginners , netbook, linux, 386, 486, 586

question, why is your swap so big? I do not follow that 1gb per 1GB ram, I just give me 1GB swap, and you can always create a temp swap drive or swap file if you need more swap, I've never had to and I give myself 1Gb swap and 100GB / the rest I put to /home

what is so appealing about SliTaz?
It is it's own branch of linux and will teach you few things or 3. Plus it runs on real low spec gear. Low on resources. Fast. Fun.

Yes. Something I have a little bit of experience doing. On the same Laptop when it was bit newer and both Batteries were working then.

variety is the spice of living a full life. I just felt this thread needed closure and that with a /boot/grub/menu.lst posted. Maybe someone else will benefit from my shown code steps on what works in wifi. How much space was needed for a small micro drive install (like a IPOD drive in a laptop). Showing a partition flagged as boot. You know. Things like that.

hummmmm

I must say sometimes that is the best way though. just jump right in and get your hands dirty. Void is a bare bones set up. so it too is light and airy -- easy to install weance one remembers you have to switch to a different tty then just follow the instructions.
