instal red hat 4 on Inspiron 6400

I'm installing RD 4 on Inspiron 6400 as dual boot.
What file system I have to allocate on the new partition?
What is the reasonable size of the partition?

TIA

Hi and welcome to LQ.

Those questions can only be answered by you because they depend on what you want to do with your system. The default filesystem is ext3 and it works pretty well, so just go with that if you wish. As for partitions, don't create on huge partition (like many Windows systems). Its recommended that you have at least 3 partitions, the root partition (/) where most software is installed, /home, where you personal files are stored and swap, which is virtual memory. The sizes of these partitions depend on what you are going to use your system for.

Thanks I'll have XP at the same HD

Hi, thanks for your responce.
I have 120G HD with XP SP2 on it and I'm planning to repartition it with Magic Partition to allocate 10G parttiotn for RH 4. To allocate a parttion I will have to know what File system to put or leave it RAW?
Then I'll install RH4 on this drive? I have an external USB HD to use it with Linux. The reason why I do dual boot on my xp HD, as I was tols the Inspiron bios does not do boot from the external USB HD.

I'd just create some free space for Linux and then let the Redhat installer create and format its own partitions. Ext3 would be the default filesystem for your Redhat installation and its really good for most purposes.
