if it works sometime......

I have a Toshiba a70 laptop. I have slackware installed on it, I have used slackware for years. I have always thought I an no idiot with linux. I use it all the time.
I have no sound or atheros built in wireless with my laptop (never had in linux) and I have tried everything i know of and they just dont work. so i was fine with that. the other day a friend of mine brought a mepis disk (3.3 i think) over and booted up my laptop with it. my sound and wireless worked.
now after many failed attempts again to get slackware to work (with sound mainly) i have no idea what to do. i have installed mepis to my laptop too and the sound works and the (builtin) wireless wroks about 4 out of 10 boots.
My question is, if it works in 1 distro why wont it work in another and how can I make it work. I mean slackware is no new distro. its proven and professional.
i need help.

Slackware requires a lot of manual configuration, if you don't know what modules Mepis was using for your hardware you're pretty much shit out of luck.
