Exclamation HL-DL DVD-RW unrecongnised as a device from ubuntu (kernel > 2.6.15) - cannot boot

Greetings all members!

I would really appreciate if someone could help me with a problem i seem to have with my new laptop.. I have recently got an lg laptop (latest series) with the following:
-Core2 Duo 1.80GHz (7100)
-2GB RAM
-Nvidia 8400 G
-HL-DL DVD-RW DL (Super multi block writer)

The thing is that when I try to boot the kubuntu DVD 7.04, i get the same error i have found on other posts, the "cannot access tty: job control turned off" + "(initramfs)". The difference here is that when I try to install in text mode, i still cannot do that, as ubuntu searches for cdrom devices and cannot find any!.. During the text mode install proccess it tells me I should locate on my own the drivers for the cdrom to work, and i dont know why this happens. When i did a "cat" on casper.log, i saw error messages like "cannot mound sda1 on cdrom. no such device", although ubuntu finds my hdd drive recognised as a scsi.
The spesific dvd-writer the notebook has, is recognised through bios as ATAPI.

I've already asked many ppl about it, and still knowone really knows why this happens. Any help welcomed, thx for your attention..

The only suggestions I have is to make sure in bios setup the cd is first boot and then I would try another live cd.

I've already thought of booting from another live cd but the point is that I'd like to install ubuntu linux, and not another distro..
Does the development team know about such errors handling devices?
they should do something about it..

I think that what he meant was to test with another live cd. It does sound really strange. Here's why: i installed kubuntu dapper drake on a laptop that has a DVD drive too. I downloaded the minimal live cd and put it in. The installer had no problem finding the drive at all, hence, it booted into the live cd.

This is not a punch on the dot since it's a really simple reply, but do try it. I'll let the people who know help you out with digging into directories and tweaking configuration files.

Good luck man.

You wouldn't have to install a "live cd", just boot the computer with the live cd and if it works then we can go from there and if it doesn't we can backup.

Well, at least i tried something.. here's what: i installed vmware 6 and installed kubuntu (the *same* dvd i tried to use before), and it all went fine. Kubuntu 7.04 is up and running through a virtual machine, and k3b can recognize fully my HL-DT-ST T20N DVD RAM (super multi recorder). I just dont know why this happens, there seems to be no problem at all through the virtual machine, but I cannot install it in anyway through a normal live cd boot. Should u need any further details as to how the device is recognized, i can tell you, but still there seems to be no answer to this problem. I've heard that the new kernel tried to load many things together as so it fails, dont know if that's right..

Thx..
