hard drive faliure


YO guys

I am getting this message every time i am trying to boot my laptop. it is saying that my hard drive is not ready to be read, i have winXP and linux redhat 8.0 on it , none of the OS are booting
what to do
how to save data on the hard disk it is very important for me.
Please let me know

I heard somewhere there is a command that can be set up in Grub that makes the bootloader wait an extra second or two to allow the drives to initialize. I don't know the command but that is the direction I would be searching google in..
