GNOME system sound problems

I have a Toshiba Satellite A100-VA3 laptop, Intel Pentium Dual Core T2060 1.6 GHz processor, 2GB DDR2 RAM with onboard video Intel Graphic Media Accelerator 945GM Graphic with 8-128MB Dynamically shared graphic memory, Realtek HD Audio ALC861.

After using sidux for a while I decided to try Debian GNU/Linux version 5.0.4 Lenny. All went well except I have no gnome 'system' sound. I am new to gnome as I used only KDE until now. Am I missing some gnome files? Thank you...

I'm running Gnome on Fedora and get to the sound preferences under System->Preferences->Sound. If you don't have that menu item then you are likely missing some packages.
