I am having a problem with fedora core 4 running on a dell latitude d510.
The vertical refresh rate is not correct.
I have already tried to change the vertical rate manually at /etc/X11/xorg.conf but nothing happened.
I have a Intel 915 GMS video card but the system only works if I set the VESA generic drive. If I set the drive to Intel 915 the X doesn't start.
Monitor is set to Dell 1024x768 Laptop Display Panel.
Any help is very welcome....
Thanks in advance,
Vitor
I have exactly the same problem, I haven't manages to find out any info on Dell's website none of the tools I have manage to produce an xorg.conf file with modelines that work...
Sorry for the delay, I was travelling.
Thank you Huge (Hugh): I tried that and it didn't work.
Yes, Yacthsoma, I am using the VESA (generic) driver. If I go to Desktop->System Seetings->Display->Hardware I can change the Video Card setup. I have an option Intel 915 which I tried to set but then I couldn't start X anymore.
Well, I thought, maybe Intel 915 is not the same as Intel 915G. So I download the Intel 915G driver from the Intel webpage. There are two versions available: rpm and source.
First I tried the rpm. I did rpm -i driver.rpm and apparently the installations was done, however I received no comments like "Installation done" or "Driver already installed" at the end of the process. After that I didn't know what do to. How could I select this driver, if it is really installed ? There is no new option at the Display set up described above.
Second I tried the source. I tried to compile it (make) and got the message: "This driver will only compile with the last kernel version". Since I really doubt it is going to work with the newest kernel version I have not tried to update it and compile the driver again.
Thanks for all but the problems is still there and I am affraid to be damaging my LCD monitor.
Any help is very welcome.
Vitor
Hi Vitor, I started up my system with your /etc/X11/xorg.conf file.
My log file looked pretty much identical to yours. The PCI ids were virtually all identical.
The display was fine. No flickering that I could see.
Have you edited any video modules into the pre-install list ?
How bad is the flickering on the display ?
Hi Hugh,
thank you very much for your help.
Answering your questions:
> Have you edited any video modules into the pre-install list ?
I am not sure what you mean by that but I am inclined to say no.
I don't know exactly what is the pre-install list.
> How bad is the flickering on the display ?
It is very light. I have been able to couple with it if I set a black background.
You can try to see it. Set a light blue background, the best color is the one of the standard login screen. And remove the power supply, when it is running on battery, at least in my case, the screen gets fainter and it becomes easy to see the flickering.
Hi Vitor, I see a slight variation in colour, it is only detectable in mid to light colours. I think it is due to electrical noise in the display driver.
Raising the brightness of the display helps, and screens that are not all one solid colour make it very difficult to see.
I tried 60 and 75 Hz vertical refresh - it made no difference.
