External optical drive mount problem

I didn't change anything. Honest...

Recently, as a normal user, I have been unable to mount an external DVD. I get the following:
Code:
mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/sr1,
missing codepage or helper program, or other error
In some cases useful info is found in syslog - try
       dmesg | tail or so
If I mount the disc as root, it works and I can read and copy the disc's contents.

Nothing is appearing in dmesg or messages.
Where do I look?

TIA
Jim

I'm getting confused. The first time I tried mounting the disc as root with
Code:
mount /dev/sr1
it worked. Now I get the same error.
Code:
/dev/sr0	/mnt/cdrom	auto	users,rw,noauto,gid=19,umask=002 0 0
/dev/sr1	/mnt/tmp auto	users,rw,noauto,gid=19,umask=002 0 0
Now, as root:
Code:
mount /dev/sr0
fails with
Code:
mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/sr1,
missing codepage or helper program, or other error
In some cases useful info is found in syslog - try
       dmesg | tail or so
but
Code:
mount /dev/sr0 /mnt/cdrom
works. Why? Initially I thought it might be a permissions issue.

I would say because of mkdir command gave device new name, mount point & read write permissions.
It should auto mount though.

BTW is issue resolved if so mark as solved to help others.

No, not resolved yet. In the past I have not had to be root to mount a disc, and I should not have to now.

Even though mine is an internal drive the permissions are most likely similar
/dev/scd0 /media/cdrom0 udf,iso9660 user,noauto 0 0

gentoo
No icon, but device-notifier knows it's there. I click on it and select open with file manager. Dolphin shows an empty window.
Yes to audio group.
I don't see usbmount anywhere.

I think you have to list the type of fs for cdrom & link is sr0
This is what mine says in red.
Quote:
/dev/scd0 /media/cdrom0 udf,iso9660 user,noauto 0 0
yours would most likely appear as
Quote:
/dev/sr0 /media/cdrom0 udf,iso9660 user,noauto 0 0
cdrom0 if it's the only cdrom
