dual-monitors on X; how can I know my RGB out device&driver

I'm trying to get an external monitor to work with my laptop in a way that what I see on the monitor is different than what I see on the laptop screen.

There are several ways to do this: xinerama, two X-sessions on different tty's.. I'd rather want to allocate one workspace on my X session for the monitor but a working setup will be my first target.

But the real question is, how do I know my device and driver for the RGB output that goes to the monitor. I have a whitebox laptop, so I can't rely on any information from the supplier. It's a American Megatrends motherboard, though, but I haven't been able to find any support from their site.

This is my xorg.conf (running xorg-6.8.0-r4, going to upgrade to 6.8.2)
At the moment this is working, #'d lines would work if I knew the device to use.

Code:
Section "ServerLayout"
        Identifier "DualHead"
# Screen "Screen0" LeftOf "Screen1"
# Screen "Screen1"
        Screen "Screen0"
        InputDevice "Keyboard1" "CoreKeyboard"
        Option "Xinerama" "on"
EndSection

Section "Screen"
        Identifier "Screen0"
        Monitor "laptop LCD"
Device "Builtin Default i810 Device 0"
EndSection

Section "Device"
Identifier "Builtin Default i810 Device 0"
                Driver "i810"
EndSection

#Section "Screen"
# Identifier "Screen1"
# Monitor "CRT monitor"
# Device ??????
# DefaultDepth 24
# SubSection "Display"
# Depth 24
# Modes "1280x1024" "1024x768" "800x600"
# EndSubSection
#EndSection

Section "DRI"
        Group 0
        Mode 0666
EndSection

Ok, X works with both monitors on with the same Driver.

But I get a clone, even with the clone off option.

Now I'm not sure if this is possible with a single graphics driver chip. Has anyone else succeeded in getting a different image on the lcd and the crt from a laptop?
