I've been using GNU/Linux for about 15 years non-stop at home, and finally found a question I cannot answer. On a laptop I have an external monitor and can easily move screen locations relative to the laptop with arandr or xrandr. For now I'm forced into those two programs as I'm using Xfce, but this is a choice not a fallback for my feeble mind.

Question: I'd like to dedicate one monitor for reading, such as websites, news, and other such text. The other I would use for graphics and videos, and graphics editing. What I don't know how to do is direct (at will, or pre-determined) graphics or text to their appropriate destinations.

As far as requirements, there really aren't any except keeping Xfce as my DM on the laptop. I think I could even live with CLI-only on the second monitor, and for that I would need guidance.

Hi, I don know about xfce, but with kde4 I may right click the window to get a menu, then

select more actions, special applications settings

from there I am able to select what progs get hardware accelerations.

I know that lxde uses openbox, and I have installed kde progs that work, haven tested this lately though.

Thanks Glenn. I think you're on the right track. I'm looking at software separation, but I may have to do it manually.

Do you have two graphics cards?
For example, if you have nvidia and intel, install bumblebee. Create scripts for execution the softwares that you want using more graphics processes, in which you have primusrun 'xxxx' or optirun 'xxxx' (xxxx the software).
Then, choose what monitor will be managed by each graphic card.
More experienced friends can help you if I'm wrong.

I only have one graphics card, built into the laptop. I will try bumblebee later.

I did try dual graphics cards once, when I had a 486 with 128MB... with Redhat 5.1. I selected a foreign language: redneck. I really don't miss that. Really.
